The Independent Scientific Review Board
The Independent Scientific Review Board of the European Cosmetic Prizes comprises distinguished experts from leading European research institutions, ensuring unbiased and rigorous evaluation of all submissions. Established alongside the Prizes in 2020, the board brings together 15 renowned scientists, dermatologists, and industry pioneers from 8 European countries, each serving a rotating three-year term to maintain fresh perspectives and current expertise.
Board members hold doctoral degrees in relevant fields such as cosmetic science, dermatology, chemistry, or biotechnology, with a minimum of 15 years of research experience. To maintain independence, all board members undergo a strict conflict-of-interest screening and must disclose any industry affiliations. The board’s composition reflects diverse expertise across key areas including formulation chemistry, skin biology, clinical testing, and sustainable innovation.
Currently led by Board Chair Dr. Sofia Laurent, former head of the European Institute of Cosmetic Science, the review board meets quarterly to evaluate submissions and annually to update evaluation criteria in line with scientific advances. This independent governance structure ensures that the European Cosmetic Prizes maintain the highest standards of scientific integrity in recognizing breakthrough innovations in cosmetic science.
Evaluation Methodology
Overview
The European Cosmetic Prizes follow a rigorous four-phase evaluation process to assess and recognize outstanding innovations in cosmetic science. Our methodology ensures that each innovation is evaluated thoroughly across all critical aspects of cosmetic science and development, maintaining the highest standards of scientific excellence and practical impact.
Phase One: Initial Screening
The evaluation process begins with a comprehensive screening phase where submissions are assessed for completeness and eligibility. During this crucial first step, our evaluation team reviews all documentation, ensuring that each submission includes the required clinical studies, safety data, and technical documentation necessary for thorough assessment in subsequent phases.
Phase Two: Scientific Assessment
The scientific assessment phase constitutes 40% of the total evaluation score, representing the cornerstone of our evaluation process. During this phase, submissions undergo detailed analysis of clinical efficacy, ingredient innovation, and safety profiles. Our expert reviewers examine the scientific merit and breakthrough potential of each innovation.
Phase Three: Technical Evaluation
In the technical evaluation phase, accounting for 30% of the total score, submissions are assessed for their practical implementation and real-world impact. This phase focuses on manufacturing standards, scalability, and documented consumer results, ensuring that innovations not only demonstrate scientific excellence but also practical viability.
Phase Four: Expert Panel Review
The final phase brings together our Independent Scientific Review Board for expert assessment, contributing the remaining 30% of the score. Through blind evaluation and structured deliberation, the board provides critical peer review and determines the ultimate impact potential of each innovation in advancing cosmetic science.
